As Plant Design Engineer with 13+ years of plant design experience – what are your favorite CADWorx features? What makes the software so unique?
MV: My experience begun using 2D drawings only – for this, every design change had to be done manually, starting from the plant layout until the isometric drawings. CADWorx has positively changed my mind, as all my engineering designs are available in one place! Isometric drawings drawn manually one by one are now just one click away! Automatic deliverables are one of the best features for sure, as they are helping us to save time.
Are there any upcoming/recent updates to CADWorx?
MV: I think that the BricsCAD platform will be key in the future when CADWorx is going to be an even more mature product with BIM and mechanical capabilities as never seen before.
Would you have any tips for the HxGN LOCAL CAUx 2017 attendees – other presentations they should definitely see?
MV: I’m sure that all the sessions will be great, the only difference is what you need to learn! Luckily, all our sessions will be available for the attendees so, don’t worry, just come and join us!

My first encounter with AutoCAD was as a young co-op engineering student at a large electric power company in the summer of 1983. My boss placed a brand new Compaq Portable – the size of a suitcase - and a couple of floppy disks on my desk.
“Here, co-op, see if you can do anything productive with this thing,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but I had just been given one of about 50 of the first PCs that company had bought as an experiment to see if these newfangled personal computers had any business value. Heck, my programming classes in college were still on IBM mainframes – I’d seen some IBM PCs in a few professors’ offices, but hadn’t ever used one.

Most of us want to be more productive as both in business and everyday life, productivity has become a measurement for worthiness and success. But what does being productive really consist of?
Merriam-Webster dictionary defines productivity simply as the quality or state of being productive. This seems hardly like an eye-opening definition – personally, I believe productivity to be more than improving efficiency, or faster execution of tasks. Productivity requires us to do things smarter and better. As Mr. Meyer mentions above – commit oneself to excel, plan smarter and focus on one’s goals.

“One of the key benefits of using Visual Vessel Design is the ability to use the created 3D model also for CAD engineering. This model gives the user a global overview of designs and calculations, helping to prevent mistakes.”, said Stefan Wesseling, service specialist at NEWES after using Intergraph CAESAR II and Visual Vessel Design in a pipe design project.
Background
NEWES was contracted to perform pipe design for a new power plant with three clinical boilers. The scope included creating a DN500 steam line from the three boilers to the pressure reducing stations that have connections with the existing steam piping systems. This also comprised safety lines to safety valves with blow out lines. In addition, NEWES was asked to create a DN350 feed water line from the boiler feed water tank to the boiler feed water pumps.
All of the systems were to be designed within the PED (European Pressure Equipment Directive) according to the Dutch laws for pressure vessels (RToD).
Challenges
The three cylindrical boiler connections with low allowable forces and moments made the steam line design especially challenging. The distance between the three boilers was only seven meters and one or two of the boilers could be out of service at times.
In addition, the main obstacle for successful design and implementation of feed water lines were the allowable forces and moments on the feed water pumps. To overcome these challenges, NEWES chose to design an expansion loop between each boiler connection and the main steam line. The system would be checked according various design cases, ensuring compliance with the specified loads and accuracy of the design.
Realizing Results
Intergraph Analysis Solutions were chosen for the project mainly due to the reliability and ability to check designs and stresses in accordance to multiple design codes. NEWES also found the user-friendliness and ease of use of the products to be key for efficient project delivery. The ease of use enabled NEWES to start executing the project quickly and the company was ready for production after only a few weeks of training.
NEWES chose to use CAESAR II for all of the stress calculations in accordance with ASME, EN, and RToD codes, whilst Visual Vessel Design was used for the internal pressure calculations according to ASME and EN codes. First, the piping system stresses were checked with CAESAR II and the resulting nozzle loads for the boilers were checked according to the EN13445 with Visual Vessel Design.
The key benefits NEWES realized by using Intergraph software included:
• True international code flexibility: ability to perform stress calculations in accordance with all international design codes.
• Shortened project time due to efficient and accurate pipe stress and pressure vessel analysis.
• Accurate and correct stress and pressure vessel analysis

Visual Vessel Design (VVD) is a comprehensive pressure vessel, shell and tube exchanger, and boiler design and analysis software with a strong emphasis on European codes and standards.
VVD enables the explicit modeling of most vessel components. However, while building the model, the input tabbed pages of a component are filled in and the component is analyzed and saved. Any existing component in a model that could be relevant to the current component’s input may be available for selection during that input so that its pertinent information can be used in the current component analysis.
Most components’ input enable the manual entry of relevant data about neighboring or attached components that affect the current component analysis. The analysis of the component can be completed and vessel modeling can proceed.
One example of this is a jacket attachment component, ‘BR Block/Sealing Ring.’ The vessel main cylindrical shell has already been modeled and the component attached to it, but no jacket yet. Therefore, relevant details of the jacket must be manually entered:
If the main cylindrical body of the jacket is explicitly modeled at a later stage so that a complete vessel is built up, then that jacket shell component (relevant data) can be retrospectively added to the Sealing Ring component:
In fact, manually entering the jacket parameters for the Sealing Ring enables the analysis of the sealing ring to show whether or not the input jacket parameters will allow the analysis to pass and, therefore, helps design the jacket.
Another example is in fixed tubesheet heat exchanger analysis. A later added ‘EB Expansion Bellows’ component can be added (relevant data) to tubesheet input so that it can be included in the tubesheet analysis.
For example, Tubesheet input with (‘Including’) Expansion Bellows:
Yet another example is in cone to shell junction rings for ASME VIII Division 1 vessels. Later added ‘SR Stiff. Ring’ components can be added (relevant data) to Conical Shell input so that they (inertia ...) can be included in the analysis of the cone.
For example, Bottom Ring inclusion (at large base of cone):
Top Ring inclusion (at small base of cone):
Given this capability, required for complete 3D vessel modeling purposes, the design engineer can choose the extent of vessel component modeling to obtain the required analysis and deliverables for a given vessel. This is a major benefit for your workflows.

If you have ever been unsatisfied with slow software that freezes every step of the way or just spins and spins but never loads, this article will be useful for you. Among many causes of slow software performance, the most common is outdated software, which is the beginning of user frustration. Following these guidelines will eliminate the difficulties with obtaining upgrades and all of those tech support calls and playing phone tag.
Treat your software upgrades as you would a mandatory physical checkup. You can skip them if you choose to, but, as your physician, Intergraph strongly recommends you apply software upgrades frequently. This is necessary for a healthier and more efficient life of your software. Plus, the upgraded software enables you to exploit improved tools and features, enjoy speedier software performance and, most importantly, it gives you access to the latest international design and analysis codes and standards.
Our development team is constantly working on adding new software functions. This is to give you the best and most reliable product. Once the new product version becomes available (whether it is a Service Pack, Hot Fix, or a major software release), we always publish an official announcement on our home page. Also, there will be a two-session webinar introducing what’s new in this release (see Webinars), so our customers across different time zones can join live discussions. Therefore, we encourage you to always keep an eye on our website.
How do I know when a new upgrade is available?
Besides the online announcements, webinars, and newsletters, the other way to find out about upgrades is through the software itself. Here is what you need to do.
If you are a PV Elite owner, you may adjust configuration parameters within your software and select how frequently you wish to be notified about upgrades. Please be advised that this feature is not enabled by default. To make custom changes, please open PV Elite, go to the TOOLS tab, select the “Set Configuration Parameters” button, select the “Default Value Settings” tab within the Configuration window, then click the “Check for Upgrade Options” button and make your desired changes here:
If you have previously selected a “Never” option, and your PV Elite software is no longer sending you upgrade reminders, there is still a way to check for upgrades, Again, within your software, go to the Help tab and select the “Check for Updates” button:
** Note: The “Check for Updates” button is available in most of our Intergraph CADWorx & Analysis Solutions software products.
If the newest Service Pack or upgrade is released, your software will recommend you to contact Intergraph Sales via email (sales.icas@intergraph.com). If there is no upgrade available, you will receive a prompt pop-up message that looks like this:
Attention CADWorx, GT STRUDL, FEATools, and NozzlePRO users: To check for your current version upgrades, please log in to our customer support website and sign up to receive email notifications about future updates.
Here is another tip: order your upgrades with the easy and convenient Upgrade Request Form. Simply complete the required fields (marked with *) and click the “Submit” button. Your upgrade request is submitted directly to our Software Delivery Desk and your package will be dispatched within two business days.
