Insider blog met with Sonny Di Lorenzo, owner of Marson 3D Innovative to talk about one of their latest projects with Intergraph® CADWorx® solutions.
Insider blog: Could you tell us a little bit about your company and some of the latest projects you have executed with Intergraph solutions?
Sonny Di Lorenzo: We are an Italian engineering company specializing in detailed and reverse engineering – we’d like to consider ourselves as pioneers in laser-scanning in our region.
I think an interesting example of a project to discuss is the cryogenic plant insertion we did for Isagro, an Italian owner operator in the agro-pharmaceutical market. Isagro needed a new cryogenic plant to be erected inside an existing facility – therefore a new as-built 3D model of the facility needed to be created to facilitate the insertion of the new plant.
IB: What were the biggest challenges you met during the project?
SDL: The biggest challenge was the time constraint stipulated by Isagro. We needed a way to shorten our original engineering schedule to meet the tight deadline. We chose Intergraph CADWorx software due to its ease of use and accuracy, as well as the ability to utilize point cloud data inside a CAD environment. We also found it important to be able to create customized interfaces with other software suites that we were already using.
IB: What were your main project steps?
SDL: The first step in the project execution workflow involved capturing the existing facility in Bussi Sul Tirino (Italy). We performed the laser scanning survey in only half a day! Back at the office, to produce a single point cloud, we registered and unified the individual point clouds captured on-site using Leica’s Cyclone software. We also used Leica’s TruView software to check the quality of the point cloud.
Next, we imported the existing point cloud to CADWorx fieldPipe™, where we created a detailed 3D model of the existing facility. After that, the new cryogenic plant design model created in CADWorx Plant Professional was combined with the point cloud and the as-built model developed from it. This was done to check for clearances and to ensure no clashes existed.
IB: What would you say were the biggest benefits you experienced during the project?
SDL: We saw how the interoperability of the solutions drove a faster project execution throughout the entire workflow, from the laser scanning survey performed on-site to 3D model creation in the office. In addition, CADWorx Design Review proved to be invaluable in our discussions with Isagro. It ensured that we could make timely decisions to keep the project on track, and helped us to plan efficient and safe construction execution.
Our POC from Isagro, Alberto Pagliani provided us with the following quote: “The detailed design process used for this project was very powerful, I was really impressed! It can be widely utilized in future projects. Design review helped us to correctly understand all the design and construction steps, checking correspondence of process and construction documents.”
