CAESAR II is the world’s best known tool for Pipe Stress Analysis. It can be (and is) used efficiently within a project workflow as a stand-alone product. However, when used with Intergraph’s 3D CAD modelling software SmartPlant 3D* and CADWorx Plant** then errors are drastically reduced, the time between analysis ‘release’ and approval is reduced and therefore productivity and efficiency are improved.

A large proportion of a given plant is made up of piping (approx. 80-90%). From this approximately 60% of the piping systems are defined as ‘critical’ and require some form of formal stress analysis in order to demonstrate their safety.  If the data from the 3D model is not re-used for analysis, between 60 to 70% of the stress analysis task is spent re-modelling the piping system(s). This is wasted time which could be used to improve productivity.

A common complaint amongst project managers and analysts is that interfaces with CAESAR II don’t transfer data from the CAD arena to the analysis arena with sufficient completeness, accuracy and ‘analysts’ logic’ to justify their use.  Further, it is alleged that the interfaces don’t provide sufficient user interaction or flexibility to permit the analysis to ‘do it their way’.

This Webinar will demonstrate how both of Intergraph’s 3D offerings can transfer a high percentage of a piping systems attributes to the analysis environment thus leaving the analysis to get on with the ‘analysis task’ rather than modelling. As such, the two products, used together, can address the requirements of Owner Operators, EPC’s, smaller contractors, skid designers and many more organisations. 

A brief demonstration of the stand-alone CAESAR II product will be followed by an illustration of how the time to ‘analysis approval’ is reduced through the use of Intergraph’s SmartPlant 3D and CADWorx Plant in supplying necessary attribute data.

In this article Thomas J. Van Laan, PE, President/CEO of COADE, focused on the role and benefits of integration in delivering real project efficiencies. He outlined how integration allows each discipline to effectively perform their primary tasks while allowing other stake holders to leverage the input and results that each workgroup produces.

Van Laan also touched on the fact that because COADE is a one-stop producer of plant design (CADWorx) and engineering (CAESAR II, PV Elite and TANK) software it is well suited to deliver the quality and depth of integration that the market demands. He also highlighted that this degree if integration is one that many users of COADE's engineering products have wished (and lobbied) to be made available for their current plant design systems. He pointed out that, regardless of the plant design solution COADE's engineering product users choose, the company still regards their needs as a top priority. Even though COADE would like to deliver the same degree of integration that exists between the COADE family of products, this is far more difficult when these solutions are not soured in house.

Turning to Japan, COADE's President and CEO was asked to comment on the rapid growth and adoption of COADE's product line in the country. Van Laan pointed out that Japanese customers want what customers all over the world want, and that is, cost-effective, easy-to-use plant design and engineering solutions based on open standards. He also touched on the fact that developers at COADE come from the industry and therefore know what users' needs are. He concluded by sharing that this industry focused competency has lead to a great degree of trust in the industry, and that trust is now showing itself in the fast growing Japanese market.

Chemical Engineering Progress Article on Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&ID's)

In its monthly magazine, Chemical Engineering Progress, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) runs an article series called 'Back to Basics'. The aim of these articles is to provide graduate and new engineers with information on engineering terms, procedures and best practices. These articles are written to also provide more experienced engineers with information, at a basic level, of new technologies and practices.

In this article, published in May, 2009, COADE was asked to develop an article highlighting the difference between various types of process flow sheets. The article entitled Designing a Process Sheet outlines the unique purpose and requirements of the Block Flow Diagram (BFD); the Process Flow Diagram (PFD); and the Piping and Instrument Diagram (P&ID).

Hydrocarbon Engineering Article on Integrated Software Solutions

Hi,

In this article, published in Hydrocarbon Engineering's March 2009 issue, I wanted to outline the benefits of plant design solutions that seamlessly share information. I felt it also important to highlight how the loss of information adversely effects the design and engineering process, and the accurate and timely production of deliverables.

Often for information transfer the words 'interoperability' and 'integration' are used interchangeably. We believe that both methods of sharing information are very different and both vital to the design process. Even so certain tasks are best suited to one or the other form of information transfer.

For example, if you wanted to produce an accurate piping isometric from a piping or plant design system, the best way would be to output that information in a format that would be accurately read by an isometric package. This is a good example of 'interoperability', as demonstrated between COADE CADWorx Plant Professional and ISOGEN by Alias.

On the other hand the bi-directional link that exists between COADE CAESAR II and COADE CADWorx Plant is fundamentally different. In this case information is seamlessly transferred both to and from the pipe stress analysis package and the piping and plant design package, this method of information transfer accurately illustrates our definition of 'integration'. 

COADE's goal is to move closer to an extensible world of integrated plant design and engineering solutions, and being authors of both design and engineering tools give us a great head start. Even so we realize that in any effective system both interoperability and integration have areas of operation within which they are most effective.

CADWorx fieldPipe featured in the Australian Pipeliner

CADWorx fieldPipe, a product that combines Leica Geosystem's laser precision with Leica fieldPro's in-field direct-to-model power, was featured in the Australian Pipeliner magazine in April , 2009.

The article talks about the intelligence and accuracy of the laser technology of CADWorx fieldPipe and how Falk PLI Engineering and Surveying group used it to save project time and to eliminate the added cost and rework. "We saved approximately six to eight hours just for one spool piece - a full workday. That is less than 50 per cent of the time it would normally take," says David Danko, Falk Laser Scanning Project Manager.

COADE announces the publication of an article on Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd. (Godrej) of India that discusses the firm’s use of COADE PV Elite for vessel analysis and design on the largest single piece of equipment ever undertaken by the company, weighing in at 800 metric tons. The magazine article, titled “A Study in Contrasts,” appears in the Hydrocarbon Engineering January, 2009 issue and discusses a polypropylene reactor project designed, fabricated and shipped out of the Mumbai port as a single unit to be installed at the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation’s Ibn Zahr PP-III Project in Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia. 

Using PVElite, Godrej completed the massive project in record time.  Calculations were carried out by PV Elite software, which also provided the code and mechanical design calculations and inputs for fabrication drawings.  The article notes that because of PV Elite’s accuracy and speed of use, Godrej PED was able to rely on it to prepare accurate information for bids for almost any region of the globe.

World Pipelines features CADWorx FieldPipe

World Pipelines Magazine - December, 2008

Read how IMAGE Custom Engineering Solutions, LLC (IMAGE CES), Field Services division (IMAGE Field Services), based in Houston, Texas, USA, has successfully completed the as-built computer modeling of over 70 of approximately 200 gas compression stations owned by CenterPoint Energy Field Services.

What is most remarkable about this project is the speed, accuracy and ultimate ‘intelligence’ of what was produced.  IMAGE CES completed this first phase in record time using only two onsite engineers to produce fully intelligent 3D plant, piping and equipment models of each site to an accuracy of one-eighth inch.

To achieve this task this task they used CADWorx fieldPipe from COADE Inc.

“To do what we have done in six months would have taken us maybe years to do manually,” explained Don Nuckels, PE, President/CEO of IMAGE CES.

COADE Inc., a US based CAD and Engineering software developer, has registered and opened up COADE Japan on September 10th, 2008. This office, in Japan, is the first overseas subsidiary for COADE, Inc. 

COADE, Headquartered Houston, Texas, USA, develops the following packages; CADWorx Plant Design Suite, an AutoCAD based 3D plant design solution; CAESAR II, a pipe stress analysis solution; and PVElite, for pressure vessel and exchanger design and analysis. Recently COADE has also co-developed solutions that enable quick and easy 3D laser based intelligent information gathering.

Currently in Japan CAESAR II is already well established and widely used in the plant engineering industry. Support for this product has been provided by COADE’s local representatives IT Solutions and Toyo Engineering. On the CAD front COADE’s CADWorx Plant Design Suite is also highly regarded in Japan and is used by some large engineering firms. These companies have settled on CADWorx because they have found very few AutoCAD-based plant design tools with the product's capabilities are currently on the market. On a side note Autodesk, the developers of AutoCAD, has recently released AutoCAD P&ID and will be releasing AutoCAD Plant next year.

Until recently the only AutoCAD-based plant solution available in Japan was AutoPLANT, formally from Rebis, now owned by Bentley Systems. Both the AutoCAD DWG format, used by Autodesk, Bentley and COADE, and the MicroStation DGN format used by Bentley and Intergraph, dominate the CAD market. In July 2008 things became more interesting when Autodesk and Bentley entered into an agreement that would create compatibility between these two formats.

COADE became the fifth plant design and engineering developer looking for a foot hold in Japan, following on the heals of Intergraph, AVEVA, Bentley Systems, and Autodesk. With COADE new regional representation it will be interesting to see how the Japanese market will react to this newcomer.
