Announcing new Support Organization at Intergraph CAS

We are pleased to outline some positive changes that are being made in the delivery of technical support, beginning on September 8, 2011.  Personally, I am enthusiastic about these changes as I know that they will allow us to continue providing you with the high quality technical support that you have come to expect.

We have done several things to enhance our support capabilities and while there will no doubt be some minor growing pains as we move forward, I am confident that this new arrangement will ultimately benefit all.

First, we have formed a dedicated support team for all of the Intergraph CAS product line.  The core members of this team will be Support Engineers who will be focused solely on customer support.  We believe that this approach will result in better resolution times for your questions and issues.  We are also in the process of expanding this team, adding experienced personnel to the existing staff, so you will be hearing from some new people over the next few months.

In addition, we have recognized that it is critical that we become more structured in how we log and track your support questions.  By doing this, we will be better able to evaluate your ideas for enhancements, ensure that your queries are being answered in a timely fashion, and better evaluate when we need to add staff or modify our processes.  This will also result in improved visibility on the status of your questions or requests than ever before.

In order to implement these changes we will require your input at a simple level.  This will not involve a large time investment and, as already mentioned, it will be to your benefit in terms of quality of support and speed of resolutions.

Practical Piping Vibration
This course provides a background on fundamental causes of piping vibration and how to identify sources of vibration, rules of thumb and simplified methods for evaluating vibration severity, and methods of treatment. A wide variety of causes of vibration are covered in order to enable the participant to properly evaluate the variety of piping vibration problems that can occur in piping systems.The causes of vibration, where possible, are discussed with respect to very basic energy and momentum principles that enable the participant to understand what is happening within and to the piping system.

Dr. Charles Becht is a recognized authority in pressure vessels, piping, expansion joints, and elevated temperature design. He has more than 30 years of experience in design, design review, analysis, check-out, mechanical integrity, development, troubleshooting, and failure analysis. He has developed new components, design methods, and Code rules for severe service and other applications. Chuck, a licensed professional engineer in 17 states and provinces, is an ASME Fellow and has more than 50 publications and five patents and is a frequent speaker and chairman at technical forums. He received the ASME Dedicated Service Award in 2001 and was the recipient of the 2009 ASME Pressure Vessel and Piping Medal. He is President of Becht Engineering Co., Inc, President of Helidex, LLC,and Director of Sonomatic Ltd. His professional career began with Energy Systems Group, Rockwell International, where he became lead engineer in charge of elevated temperature piping and expansion joint R & D programs for Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactors and continued with Exxon Research and Engineering. He is a leader in Codes and Standards activities, and is currently the B31.3 Process Piping Section Committee Chair. Chuck received a PhD from Memorial University in Mechanical Engineering (Dissertation: Behavior of Bellows), a Master of Science degree from Stanford University in Structural Engineering and his B.S.C.E. from Union College, New York.

ASME B31.3 Process Piping - Design, Construction, and Mechanical Integrity
This course will review the basic requirements ofthe ASME B31 Code for Pressure Piping with emphasison B31.3 and comparisons with B31.1 - PowerPiping. General topics in the course include Codeorganization and intent, pressure design, designfor sustained loads including support design, flexibility analysis, equipment loads, flanges, expansion joints, supports and restraints, materials, fabrication, examination, testing, and, for existing piping systems, mechanical integrity. Inspection and maintenance (mechanical integrity) of existing piping systems will be covered, as provided in API570, Piping Inspection Code.

Course Fees Include : Comprehensive Manual of Course Notes. Lunch, Coffee & SnacksB31.3. Course Participants will receive a copy of Dr. Becht’s book, Process Piping: The Complete Guide to ASME B31.3

Don Frikken is an internationally recognized authority in piping design. Now employed by Becht Engineering, Don had been with Solution, Inc. and Monsanto Company for 34 years; working on a wide range of activities including piping and mechanical design, project engineering, and engineering standards. However, Don’s principal specialty ispiping design, including design of complex piping systems, piping flexibility analysis, selection of piping components, development of piping standards and specifications, and developing and teaching numerous piping seminars and workshops. He is an ASME Fellow and isactive on various ASME standards committees. He is past Chair of the ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code committee, past Chair of the B31 Standards Committee, which oversees all B31 Piping Code committees, member of the B16 Standards Committee, past member of the Board on Pressure Technology Codes and Standards, member of the Council on Standards and Certification, which overseesthe development and maintenance of six hundred ASME codes and standards. Don has received a numberof awards including the ASME Melvin R. Green Codes and Standards Medal, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the development of documents used in ASME programs of technical codification, standardization and certification. Don graduated with a BSME from Kansas State University and has a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla.

Gary Carson, Equamark Inc., USA, describes the important role that oil storage tank standards play in tank design and our environmental safety.

Steel aboveground storage tanks are a key link in the worldwide distribution of energy, buffering the cyclical needs of our society. Because of the need for these tanks to be close to populated regions any loss in the integrity of these units can cause catastrophic damage. There are obviously some natural disasters that cannot be designed for, such as the recent tsunami off the cost of Japan, but designing and building to strict standards can make for a safer, and therefore easier, coexistence between facilities and the communities they serve.

This article also touches on what happens when things go wrong and the causes of these, mostly avoidable, disasters, and how software like Intergraph^® TANK^TM help make aboveground storage tanks safer.

We are pleased to announce the first place prize winners of the CADWorx and Analysis University 2011 Drivers of Success competition. These companies were judged to have exhibited impressive results in the use of the Intergraph CADWorx Plant Design Suite, CAESAR II Pipe Stress Analysis, and PV Elite Pressure Vessel Analysis. As their prize Intergraph CADWorx & Analysis Solutions has awarded these winning entrants with paid conference fees for one representative, plus paid hotel accommodation and travel to and from their home cities/countries.

CADWorx Plant Design: Harder Mechanical, USA

Harder Mechanical Contractors, Inc. (HMC) specializes in the fabrication and installation of process mechanical/piping systems for commercial, industrial, bio-pharmaceutical, and advanced technology projects. This was for a chemical processing plant project in California State, USA and a first time application of Intergraph CADWorx Plant for the company. HMC used CADWorx Plant to successfully model over 150 unique pieces of equipment and complete over 800 model design changes during the project thereby realizing the benefits of 3D modeling, ISOGEN automated isometric drawing production, automated bill of materials reporting.

MMPL used CAESAR II to successfully analyze high temperature systems and complete an accurate stress analysis of all critical lines.
